He Came to Be Our Helper

Preached by Pastor Phill Howell

December 29th Sermon Summary

In this final message of our advent series, Pastor Phill preaches that contentment is a fruit, and the gospel is the root.

In Hebrews 13:5-6, the writer calls us to be free from the love of money and to find contentment in God's promises. This contentment grows from the promises that God gives in the gospel, as we trust in God’s provision and protection, not in material wealth.

Therefore, God’s promises from yesterday are fulfilled in Christ today, giving us confidence and contentment forever. Through the gospel, we are assured of God's presence and help, enabling us to confidently declare, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear.” This confidence leads to true contentment that comes from knowing God will never leave us or forsake us.

Sermon Outline

  1. Contentment is a fruit and the gospel is the root.

Contentment isn’t something we can manufacture on our own; it is the fruit of the Holy Spirit working in our lives. The gospel is the foundation for this fruit, as we trust in God’s promises of provision and protection. When we place our faith in the gospel, contentment naturally flows from our hearts.

  1. God’s promises from yesterday are fulfilled in Christ today, giving us confidence and contentment forever.

Hebrews 13:5-6 draws on God's historical promises to His people and shows how they are fulfilled in Christ. These promises are active and present today, giving us unshakable confidence and lasting contentment as we trust in God's faithfulness to provide all that we need for this life and the life to come.

Sermon Text: Hebrews 13:1-6

Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”
