Running Free in the Limits of God's Law

The 123rd Sermon in our sermon Series “The Songs of Our Savior” preached by Pastor Phill Howell

Sermon Summary

Main Point: When your freedom dissolves into the dust, discover the grace of dependence and the delight in God's deliverance.

Summary: This week, we continue our 8-week series through Psalm 119 by examining the Daleth stanza (verses 25-32). The theme of this sermon is true freedom. We begin by observing how the psalmist’s cry, “My soul clings to the dust,” speaks to our human tendency to chase supreme independence and total self-reliance, only to find our freedom dissolving into despair.

The main point of this message is that true freedom is not found in escaping God’s limits but in discovering the grace of dependence upon God as we delight in the loving deliverance God provides through Jesus. The gospel is such good news that we are not only lifted from the dust of our sin and shame but also set free to walk, and even run, in the life-giving path of His commands.

Sermon Outline:

  1. When your freedom dissolves into the dust

  2. Discover the grace of dependence

  3. Delight in God's deliverance.

Sermon Text: Psalm 119:25-32

25 My soul clings to the dust;

give me life according to your word!

26 When I told of my ways, you answered me;

teach me your statutes!

27 Make me understand the way of your precepts,

and I will meditate on your wondrous works.

28 My soul melts away for sorrow;

strengthen me according to your word!

29 Put false ways far from me

and graciously teach me your law!

30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness;

I set your rules before me.

31 I cling to your testimonies, O Lord;

let me not be put to shame!

32 I will run in the way of your commandments

when you enlarge my heart!
